Not So Innocent: Clerics, Monarchs, and the Ethnoreligious Cleansing of Western Europe

Prof. Şener Aktürk from our Department of International Relations published the article “Not So Innocent: Clerics, Monarchs, and the Ethnoreligious Cleansing of Western Europe," which examines the causes and consequences of the ethno-religious cleansing of non-Christians in medieval Western Europe in International Security, one of the most prestigious journals in the field.

Prof. Serpil Sayın from the College of Administrative Sciences and Economics, Department of Business Administration, was awarded the MCDM Gold Medal in June 2024. This is the highest honor that the International Society on Multiple Criteria Decision-Making bestows upon a scholar who, over a distinguished career, has markedly contributed to the theory, methodology, practice, and professional development of MCDM. Serpil Sayın conducts research in the field of multiple objective optimization within a mathematical optimization framework.

Prof. Mehmet Cengiz Onbaşlı from the Departments of Pyhsics, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering has been honored with the prestigious international grant from The European Partnership on Metrology for his project "Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect Materials and Devices for Metrology (QuAHMET).” QuAHMET project aims to advance beyond the limitations of traditional Quantum Hall effect (QHE) devices, which rely on low temperatures and high magnetic fields. Wholehearted congratulations to Mehmet Cengiz Onbaşlı for this remarkable achievement.

Koç University KARMA Lab was awarded funding under the HORIZON-WIDERA-ACCESS-07 Excellence Hubs call within the Horizon Europe Framework Programme for the project "Cultural Heritage and Immersive Technologies for Innovation Forge" (HERIFORGE). The HERIFORGE project aims to support interconnected ecosystems in Poland, Cyprus, and Türkiye, providing an innovative and cutting-edge R&D environment in Creative Cultural Industries (CCIs). This project seeks to enhance social resilience through the use of XR technologies and the responsible use of cultural heritage. With HERIFORGE, the number of projects at Koç University eligible for support has reached 24 since the program started in February 2021.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering faculty member Dr. Uğur Teğin and his student Bahadır Utku Kesgin have created a new analog computing method that uses chaotic nonlinear attractors for efficient machine learning. Their study, published in Communication Engineering of Nature Portfolio and featured in Nature's "Neuromorphic Hardware and Computing 2024" collection, introduces a low-power, highly accurate analog model inspired by neuromorphic computing.

Asst. Prof. Levent Beker from our Department of Mechanical Engineering has been honored with the prestigious ERC Proof of Concept Grant for his pioneering project, "Wearable Ultrasound for Continuous Bladder Monitoring." Dr. Beker, the sole recipient of this esteemed support from Türkiye, is at the forefront of developing an innovative solution that enables patients to monitor their bladder volume outside the hospital setting continuously. In this 18-month project, with a budget of 150,000 Euros, Dr. Beker will collaborate with Prof. Tufan Tarcan and Assoc. Prof. Ersin Köseoğlu from the School of Medicine.
