Seminar in Medicine - Bahar Madran

Infectious diseases are one of the most critical public health threats both at the societal level and the healthcare settings, which was understood dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. The control of infections was possible by implementing relevant interventions. This topic became more critical in the era of emerging antibiotic resistance. According to the literature, the average rate of healthcare-related infections (HCRIs) is changing between 7% and 10% among inpatients according to the income level of governments. Almost 100.000 people in the U.S. die annually from HCRIs. These infections increased hospitalized days (17 days), resources (35 billion dollars annually) and mortality/morbidity rates. A quarter of HCRIs are caused by resistant bacteria and the antibiotic resistance rate can reach up to 90% in some bacterial infections in Turkiye. Therefore, prevention of infections becomes even more critical in combatting infectious diseases. To struggle with this problem, having dedicated and scientifically trained personnel is critical. We have already accomplished significant achievements in the control and prevention of HCRIs and already published some of our work. I would like to summarize pieces of our significant stories and would like to describe the big picture including our international perspective that was centred in Koç University.
